How to Cook a Taco in Project Zomboid (Build 42.19)

How to Cook a Taco in Project Zomboid (Build 42.19)

Build 42.19 · fill a Taco Shell · cook raw meats first, then assemble

Quick answer A player-made taco is built on a Taco Shell: cook fillings such as a Beef Patty fully first, then add them to the shell. You can add up to 5 ingredients. Neither a finished crafted taco nor a loot-found premade Taco is cooked again—there is no second pan, oven, or microwave step and no green cook bar on the assembled taco.

How to make a beef-patty taco

  1. Get a Taco Shell (loot) and fillings. For a classic beef taco, get a Beef Patty (loot, or craft from Ground Beef with Make Meat Patty).
  2. Place the Beef Patty directly in an active oven, stove, campfire, BBQ, or another working heat-source inventory until it is fully cooked. Default cook time is 50 minutes of heat progress; it burns at 70 minutes. A normal frying pan is a separate recipe base, not a heat source for this item. Watch the item’s cook status, not a separate “taco timer.”
  3. Do not rely on a microwave for the patty: Beef Patty is a poor microwave choice and can go bad in one.
  4. With the cooked patty (and any other fillings) in inventory, right-click the Taco Shell and add ingredients. The shell accepts up to 5 ingredients. Meats that must be cooked only appear or apply correctly once they are fully cooked.
  5. Eat the assembled taco as soon as it is built. Do not put the finished taco back on heat expecting a second cook bar—crafted and premade tacos are not cookable items.
Raw meat rule Beef Patty is unsafe raw and must be fully cooked before you eat it or put it in a taco. Other common taco meats (bacon, chicken, minced meat, steak, eggs, and similar) also need the cooked state before they are safe in this recipe. Vegetables, cheese, sauces, and already-prepared fillings usually do not—check the shell’s context menu for what you currently hold.

What actually happens

Build 42.19 treats tacos as an assembly recipe on a Taco Shell: the result is a crafted Taco, and you can add up to 5 ingredients. Only cooked meats (when required) count as valid fillings. A separate path exists for a loot Premade Taco: you may add up to 2 extra toppings, which is how you top a found taco—not how you “finish cooking” one.

  • Crafted taco: stats start from the shell and then change with every ingredient you add. There is no single fixed nutrition row for every combination.
  • Premade taco: fixed base stats when found in the world; you may still add a couple of toppings, but you do not bake it again.
  • Empty shell: edible on its own with low hunger relief, but it is mainly the base for assembly.

Nutrition (fixed items only)

Player-built tacos sum macros from the shell plus ingredients, so only empty shells and premade loot tacos have stable fixed rows. Use the table below for those; treat crafted results as dynamic.

Item Hunger Calories Carbs Lipids Proteins Fresh / rotten (days) Notes
Taco Shell −5 55 8.4 3 0.8 15 / 20 Empty base; crafted taco starts from this template
Premade Taco −25 400 80 28 32 3 / 5 Also −10 unhappiness; not cookable
Crafted Taco Dynamic from shell + up to 5 ingredients Do not use a fixed nutrition row for finished crafts
Beef Patty (raw item) −40 612 0 30 46 2 / 4 Cook 50 min / burn 70 min; avoid microwave; cook before taco use

Example fillings (not a full list)

Dozens of foods can enter a taco. Use this as a practical starter set, not an exhaustive list.

Filling Must be cooked first? Notes
Beef Patty Yes Strong hunger fill once cooked
Bacon / bacon rashers Yes Cook first; smaller bits contribute less hunger
Chicken, steak, minced meat, eggs Yes (raw forms) Cook raw forms fully before assembly
Cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato, avocado No Usually ready to add as-is
Salsa / hot sauce / guacamole-style dips No Small hunger top-ups and flavor

Where to find taco shells and premade tacos

Spawn odds are not a single flat “about 8% in kitchens.” Build 42.19 rolls separate container pools with their own weights. The places below are the usual player-facing spots—loot multipliers, custom maps, and mods can shift results.

Item Where to look Notes
Taco Shell Shop crates stocked with shells / Mexican dry goods Common crate-style store stock
Taco Shell Large grocery dry-goods shelves (Gigamart-style) Dry-goods aisles and backroom storage
Taco Shell House kitchens, Mexican restaurant kitchens, grocery storage Kitchen cabinets, restaurant prep areas, storage crates
Premade Taco Food service trays / cafeteria-style displays Serving trays and buffet-style counters
Premade Taco Band practice, safehouse, and university fridges Themed fridge loot

Food safety checklist

  • Cook every unsafe-raw filling completely before assembly.
  • Skip the microwave for Beef Patty and other meats that fare poorly in microwaves; use stove, oven, campfire, or BBQ heat instead.
  • Do not wait for a green progress bar on the finished taco—that step does not exist for this recipe result.
  • Premade tacos spoil faster (3 days fresh / 5 totally rotten) than empty shells (15 / 20).
  • For broader heat sources, assembly recipes, and power-out cooking, use the full cooking guide linked below.
Numbers at a glance Values above match Build 42.19 vanilla food and recipe data: shell and premade rows are fixed; crafted tacos stay dynamic. Sandbox loot multipliers, custom maps, and mods can change spawn weights and available ingredients.
