More Trait Points in Project Zomboid (Build 42.19): Vanilla Free Points First

Build 42.19: Custom Sandbox Free Trait Points supports −100 to 100 and defaults to 0. Workshop mods are optional—confirm Build 42 tags and recent comments before adding them to a valued save.

Quick answer You usually do not need a mod. In a Custom Sandbox game, set Free Trait Points under the Character options. That adds extra points only at character creation (range −100 to 100; major presets default to 0). Reach for Workshop trait-point mods only if you need more than 100 free points, a selectable “fake negative” trait, or infinite points—and only after checking Build 42 tags and host rules.
Build 42 mod caution Mods made for Build 41 and older must be updated for Build 42. Older unsupported mods may need Debug “Show unsupported mods” and can break saves or multiplayer. Prefer the vanilla slider first.

Vanilla: Free Trait Points (recommended)

In Custom Sandbox, open the Character section and set Free Trait Points. The in-game tooltip says it adds free points during character creation.

Single-player / solo host

  1. Start a new game (or host) and choose a sandbox-style setup, not a fixed preset you cannot edit.
  2. Open Custom Sandbox (or the sandbox editor for your host).
  3. Find the Character section.
  4. Set Free Trait Points to the bonus you want (for example 20 or 50).
  5. Finish sandbox settings, then create your character. Your available trait points include this free bonus on top of occupation/trait costs.

What the number means

Setting Value in Build 42.19
UI name Free Trait Points
Allowed range −100 to 100
Default (Apocalypse, Outbreak, Extinction, Rising, Six Months Later) 0
When it applies Character creation only—adds to points you can spend on traits for that new character
What it does not do Does not refund points mid-run, change existing survivors, or unlock traits outside normal rules

Negative values reduce free points (harder builds). Positive values are the safe, no-mod path for “I want a stronger starting kit.” Existing worlds keep their sandbox values; changing the option only affects characters created under the new setting.

Dedicated / multiplayer server

  1. Stop the server before editing sandbox files (or use the host sandbox UI if you manage settings in-game).
  2. Set Free Trait Points in the server sandbox configuration (the same Character option as in single-player).
  3. Restart so clients load the updated sandbox.
  4. Create a new character to see the free points. Already-living characters do not retroactively gain the bonus.

Server admins: treat high free points as a balance choice. Document the value for players so they know whether builds assume vanilla 0 or a house-rule bonus.

When a mod still makes sense

  • You need more than 100 free points (vanilla hard cap).
  • You want a selectable red trait that grants a large point dump without changing sandbox options (common on some multiplayer servers that lock sandbox but allow mods).
  • You want effectively unlimited trait points for testing or challenge/joke builds.

If none of those apply, stop here and use Free Trait Points. For occupation and trait planning, see occupations and traits and beginner builds.

Workshop trait-point mods (check current compatibility)

Workshop tags and update times change. Re-check each Workshop page, dependencies, and recent user reports before enabling a mod on a valued save.

If you install a trait-points mod

  1. Subscribe on Steam Workshop; wait for the download to finish.
  2. In-game: Mods → enable the correct Mod ID (and any required dependencies).
  3. For multiplayer, add the Workshop item ID and every Mod ID to the server list so host and clients match. See how to add mods to a server and where Workshop files live.
  4. Start a new character (and usually a world created with that mod load order). Mid-run enablement is unreliable.
  5. At creation, select the mod’s red/bonus trait if that is how the pack grants points; confirm your remaining point total before leaving the screen.
Do not stack blindly Multiple “+points” traits or mods can conflict, double-apply, or break multiplayer anti-cheat expectations. Prefer one solution: either vanilla Free Trait Points, or a single Workshop pack the whole server agrees on.

FAQ

Does Free Trait Points work on Apocalypse / Outbreak without Custom Sandbox?

Major presets ship with Free Trait Points at 0. To change the value you need an editable sandbox (Custom Sandbox, server sandbox file, or host settings that expose Character options). Simply picking a preset and never opening the editor leaves you at 0 free points.

Can I raise Free Trait Points above 100 without mods?

Not through the normal option—the allowed range is −100 to 100. Beyond that you need third-party content or other non-vanilla tools outside this guide’s scope.

Will changing Free Trait Points affect my living character?

No. The bonus is applied when spending points at character creation. It does not rebalance an already-created survivor.

Is +300 Points Trait safe for Build 42.19?

The Workshop page for that mod lists Build 41 and Build 42 tags and shows a late-2025 update. Treat that as the author’s claim: still test on a throwaway save before enabling it on a long-running world or multiplayer server.

Are infinite trait point mods safe for multiplayer?

Only if every client and the server load the same Mod IDs and the host accepts the balance. Older infinite packs lack Build 42 tags here; prefer vanilla free points or a clearly updated mod the server list already requires.
