Project Zomboid B42 Weight Management: Losing (and Gaining) Weight in the Apocalypse

Build 42.19 · calorie pool, gain/loss thresholds, metabolism traits, and food calories. Not a real-world TDEE calculator.

How weight works in-game Project Zomboid does not use a fixed “2,200 kcal/day + activity + 7,700 kcal = 1 kg” model. Your character keeps a calorie pool (about −2,200 to 3,700). Activity, body weight, and temperature drain it every second. Body weight only moves when that pool sits above a gain threshold or below a loss threshold. Fast / Slow Metabolism change those thresholds—not “±20% burn.” Use the planner below so meals and activity map to the weight arrow on your character panel.
Need carry weight or exercise XP? Use the Strength & Weight guide for carry capacity and exercise. For the old free Underweight +6 myth, see Is Underweight a free trait?

Character & metabolism

Hearty / Light Eater change how fast Hunger rises. Nutritionist reveals food macros in the UI. Neither is a ±20% calorie burn multiplier.

Pool range is about −2,200 … 3,700. Weight only moves when the pool is outside the thresholds below—not from a daily “deficit vs 2,200.”

Game-day activity burn (optional)

Estimated from Build 42.19 activity rates scaled by weight / 80. Hours should total about 24 for a full game day. Sandbox Day Length changes real-time length of a day, not these per-second drain rates.

Temperature / fever style multiplier on idle & sleep burn (1.0 = normal).

If carbs or lipids on your character’s nutrition counters exceed 400, gain speed doubles; above 700 it triples. Log totals approximate a heavy one-day feed—live counters change as food digests.
