Project Zomboid Fitness Exercises Guide (Build 42.19)
Build 42.19 · Exercise menu, weight traits, and Fitness Instructor
- Fitness Instructor does not cost 4 points. Profession cost is −6 (you gain 6 points to spend elsewhere).
- Weight ≥100 does not deal continuous HP damage. That band applies Very High Weight (Obese). Sustained low-weight health pressure is tied to extreme starvation near ≈35 kg, not obesity.
- 75–85 kg is the no-penalty band, not a source of extra skill XP, free speed, or free endurance buffs by itself.
- There are seven menu exercises, including Barbell Curls, Dumbbell Presses, and Bicep Curls—not only squats / push-ups / sit-ups / burpees.
How to open Exercise
- Open the Health panel (default H).
- Choose Exercise.
- Pick a workout, set duration with + / − in 10-minute steps from 10 to 60 minutes, then start.
The menu will refuse to start if you are too exhausted (Endurance moodle above the exercise threshold), over-encumbered (Heavy Load moodle level > 2), in too much pain (Pain moodle level > 3), sitting, driving, climbing, or otherwise not standing idle. Stand up, drop weight, rest, or wait out pain before another set.
All seven exercises (Build 42.19)
Each rep awards Strength and/or Fitness XP from the body parts listed under strain, then multiplies by that exercise’s XP multiplier. In-game tooltips: squats and sit-ups emphasize Fitness; push-ups, barbell curls, and free-weight arm work emphasize Strength; burpees hit both and drain endurance heavily.
| Exercise | Equipment | Strain (stiffness sites) | Intensity | XP mult. | Per-rep XP (before mult.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Squats | None | Legs | Normal | 1.0 | Fitness +4 (legs) |
| Push-ups | None | Arms, chest | Normal | 1.0 | Strength +4 arms, +2 chest |
| Sit-ups | None | Abs | Normal | 1.0 | Fitness +2 (abs) |
| Burpees | None | Legs, arms, chest | Heavy | 0.8 | Strength +6 and Fitness +4, then ×0.8 (lower XP because three sites) |
| Barbell Curls | Barbell (both hands) | Arms, chest | Heavy | 1.2 | Strength focus (arms + chest) ×1.2 |
| Dumbbell Presses | Dumbbell (switches hands) | Arms | Heavy | 1.8 | Strength (arms) ×1.8 |
| Bicep Curls | Dumbbell (switches hands) | Arms | Heavy | 1.8 | Strength (arms) ×1.8 |
Regularity and next-day muscle strain
- Each exercise tracks its own Regularity (0–100). The Fitness UI shows a Regularity bar for the selected move.
- Repeating an exercise raises Regularity and reduces how hard the same workout hits endurance and future stiffness compared with a cold start.
- Strain is scheduled on the body sites listed above. After about 12 hours, those parts gain stiffness/pain—what players call exercise fatigue or Muscle Strain.
- Heavy moves (burpees and free weights) apply a higher stiffness multiplier than normal-intensity moves.
- There is no instant “cure” item that clears strain. Stop training, rest, manage pain if needed, and wait. Details: Exercise fatigue / Muscle Strain.
Fitness Instructor, Fire Officer, and Security Guard characters can start with non-zero Regularity on exercises (Instructor often starts around 40–60). That is a head start on soreness adaptation, not free max Fitness.
Fitness Instructor profession
| Detail | Build 42.19 |
|---|---|
| Point cost | −6 (grants 6 trait points) |
| XP boosts | Fitness +3 · Sprinting +2 · Strength +1 |
| Granted trait | Nutritionist — nutritional values visible on food |
XP boosts speed skill progression; they are not the same as starting at Fitness 10. Pair the occupation with a safe training plan rather than max-duration burpees on day one.
Weight bands (traits from body weight)
Body weight applies dynamic traits with the in-game names High Weight, Very High Weight, Low Weight, Very Low Weight, and Emaciated. 75–85 kg is the band without these penalty traits—stay here to avoid weight-trait combat/endurance penalties. It is not a special “bonus XP zone” for exercise.
| Weight (kg) | Trait (UI name) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| ≥ 100 | Very High Weight (Obese) | Severe high-weight state. Does not apply continuous HP drain by itself. |
| 85 – <100 | High Weight (Overweight) | High-weight penalties while you remain in band. |
| >75 and <85 | None (normal band) | No Low/High weight trait from mass alone. Target range for most survivors. |
| >65 and ≤75 | Low Weight (Underweight) | Light underweight band. |
| >50 and ≤65 | Very Low Weight | Stronger underweight state; blocks high-level Fitness XP gains together with other extremes. |
| ≤ 50 | Emaciated | Critical underweight. Continuous low-weight health pressure appears near ≈35 kg, not at 100+. |
Calories, macros, and changing weight
- Weight moves from calorie surplus or deficit over time, modified by carbohydrates and lipids (fat). High carb/lipid stores accelerate gain when calories are already high.
- “Processed vs non-processed” is not a single game quality flag that decides fatness. Read Calories, hunger, and macros on each item (Nutritionist helps).
- Exercise raises metabolic demand (normal and heavy workouts). Sleeping burns far less than working out—you cannot meaningfully “sleep to lose weight” as a primary strategy.
- Trait modifiers such as Weight Gain / Weight Loss change how easily you store or shed mass; they are separate from the dynamic High/Low Weight bands.
For food tables and diet planning, use the food guide and the weight-trait notes in Underweight / weight traits.
Practical training plan
- Secure a safe room before starting—you cannot fight effectively mid-set, and movement cancels the action.
- Start at 10–20 minutes on one or two moves. Watch Regularity and next-day strain on legs/arms/abs.
- Rotate sites: e.g. squats (legs/Fitness) one day, push-ups or dumbbell work (arms/Strength) another, so stiffness does not stack on the same parts every session.
- Use free weights when you find them for stronger Strength XP modifiers; keep a barbell/dumbbell at base because they are heavy to haul on loot runs.
- Hold 75–85 kg while leveling Fitness so trait penalties and late-game XP gates do not fight you.
- Jogging and sprinting still matter for movement skills and calorie burn, but the dedicated Strength/Fitness gym loop is this Exercise menu—not only running loops around town.
