Project Zomboid B42 Smoker Trait: −3 Points, Costs & Stockpile Math

Build 42.19 · trait cost, exclusives, smoke item effects, stockpile math

Smoker is not free points In Build 42.19 it returns only −3 creation points, blocks Athletic, and commits you to a tobacco habit. Smoking also raises food sickness and can trigger a cough. Treat those as hard costs; stockpile advice below is a playstyle helper, not a game constant.

Trait facts (Build 42.19)

Numbers below match the Build 42.19 character creator and official English trait text.

Trait Smoker
Creation cost −3 points
Mutually exclusive with Athletic (cost 10)
XP boosts / granted recipes None
State What the game does Notes
Not smoking (Smoker) Unhappiness rises while tobacco is not smoked Matches the in-game trait description
After smoking tobacco Stress and unhappiness decrease Trait text + per-item stress reduction on smokables
Character creation Cannot take Athletic at the same time Hard exclusive in the trait picker
Quitting No vanilla rule removes Smoker by “going cold turkey” Trait stays unless debug/mod changes traits
In-game description “Unhappiness rises when tobacco is not smoked. Stress and unhappiness decrease after smoking tobacco.”

What each smoke actually costs

Every smoke is an action that applies the item’s own effects. A normal cigarette is not “free calm”: it still adds food sickness and can cough. Smoker characters still get those item effects; the trait mainly changes the withdrawal/unhappiness loop when you do not smoke.

Smoker trait icon Smoker trait
Cigarette icon Cigarette
Cigarette pack icon Cigarette Pack
Lighter icon Needs a light source
Item Stress Food sickness Cough risk Notes
Cigarette −5 +14 Lower for Smoker than non-smoker Weight 0.01; short smoke time
Cigarette Pack −5 per use +14 per use Lower for Smoker than non-smoker 20 smokes per full pack
Rolled Cigarette −4 +14 Lower for Smoker than non-smoker Crafted path when packs run out
Cigarillo −8 +21 Higher cough risk than a cigarette Longer smoke time
Cigar −10 +28 Higher cough risk than a cigarette Also unhappiness −40 / boredom −20; longer smoke time
Chewing Tobacco −10 per use +14 per use 20 uses per full tin; no flame required

Cough is a real risk on most smoke items; Smoker characters cough less often than non-smokers, but it is not zero. Treat the numbers above as relative severity (stress relief vs sickness), not a guaranteed percentage table.

Is −3 worth it?

Compare Smoker to other −3 options and to what you give up. The big opportunity cost is Athletic (strong Fitness package, cost 10): if your build wants that package, Smoker is off the table.

Your build priority Smoker? Why
Want Athletic / high Fitness package No Hard exclusive in character creation
Need stress control and will loot retail early Maybe −3 points + stress relief when you have tobacco; habit cost is real
Hate inventory chores / long winter runs Usually no Unhappiness climbs when dry; no free “quit smoking” removal
MP with shared base tobacco Maybe Communal stash lowers personal risk; still −3 and Athletic lock
Counting on “free points” like old B41 memes No Current cost is only −3, not a large free dump of points
Withdrawal timing is not “one cigarette per day” Nicotine pressure follows the character’s smoke timer and moodle loop, not a documented 24-hour quota. Smoke when stress or nicotine withdrawal is climbing; do not invent a fixed daily tax from old guides.

Stockpile math (playstyle helper)

The game does not publish a guaranteed cigarettes-per-day spawn rate for every map and loot setting. What you can compute is inventory coverage once you choose a use rate.

  • Pack math: 1 full pack = 20 smokes; 1 carton unpacks to 10 packs = 200 smokes if full.
  • Weight: singles are 0.01 each; a pack is 0.2 (same mass as 20 singles).
  • Ignition: smokables need a light source (lighter/matches/lit candle, stove/campfire/BBQ, or vehicle lighter). See the smoking guide for the full vanilla list.
Stash calculator

Enter your observed smokes/day and current counts. Targets are simple coverage math, not official loot quotas.

Suggested split (heuristic only)

  1. On-body: enough for your body-days target + one lighter or matches.
  2. Go-bag: a small refill you can grab if you die and respawn is not an option (SP) or if the base is contested (MP).
  3. Home: bulk packs/cartons, counted in full packs when possible.

Early loot priorities that often work: gas/convenience, bars, car glove boxes, bedside tables—while you are already looting those containers. Spawn rates vary by sandbox loot multipliers and world age; treat “high yield” as a search pattern, not a guarantee.

Safe smoke timing (player rule)

Smoking locks attention for the item’s smoke time. Treat it like reloading: only when exits are controlled.

Situation Smoke now? Better move
Just entered an uncleared building No Clear the first room / close a door first
Closed room, exit known Yes Smoke, then re-check the exit
Hearing banging / active chase No Solve the threat first
About to drive a long stretch Usually yes Stabilize moodles before the wheel
Mid-melee cleanup No Finish the pack, then smoke behind cover

Quick start if you already took Smoker

  1. Keep a light source on-body at all times (not only in a parked bag).
  2. Convert cartons → packs → known single counts so you know real days of coverage.
  3. Smoke on your schedule in safe rooms; do not wait until unhappiness spikes mid-loot.
  4. When dry, prioritize low-risk containers (cars, small shops) over deep multi-story clears.
  5. If you also need Athletic later, restart—you cannot stack both on a vanilla character.

Numbers at a glance: Build 42.19 Smoker cost −3, exclusive with Athletic; cigarette/pack stress −5 and food sickness +14 per smoke; full pack = 20 smokes. Loot abundance is sandbox-dependent and not claimed as a fixed table on this page.
