Admin Panel Missing? Role, Capability & Recovery Paths (Build 42.19)

Admin Panel Missing? Role, Capability & Recovery Paths (Build 42.19)

Build 42.19 · Multiplayer staff tools — not single-player Debug Mode

Most important fix /setaccesslevel is not a free self-promote for every Host or player. The person running it in chat must already have the Change Access Level permission on their Role. A normal survivor account cannot grant itself Admin from the T chat box. Use the dedicated server console, RCON, or an existing staff account that already has that permission.
Numbers at a glance
  • Admin HUD icon shows only when your Role has admin tools enabled.
  • Panel buttons unlock one-by-one from Role permissions — a partial staff Role can open a nearly empty panel.
  • Promote from console/RCON when no in-game staff works: /setaccesslevel "YourUsername" "admin"
  • Self God Mode: /godmode -true · Other player: /godmodeplayer "Name" -true

Quick triage

  1. Confirm you are on multiplayer (Host or dedicated). The left HUD Admin icon only appears when your Role has admin tools.
  2. Pick the recovery path that matches your situation: server console, existing staff, or Host admin login — not “run setaccesslevel as a regular player.”
  3. After your Role has staff permissions, look on the left equipment strip for the Admin button and click it to open the Admin Panel.
  4. If the icon still fails to show, disconnect and rejoin so the client rebuilds HUD widgets for the new Role.
  5. Use Edit Admin Powers for self God Mode / Invisible toggles. For another player, use /godmodeplayer / /invisibleplayer, not /godmode "Name".

Why the panel disappears

In Build 42.19 the Admin Panel is permission-driven, not a free Host perk:

  • HUD icon: The Admin button on the left equipment strip only appears when your Role has admin tools. If it does not, the button stays hidden and any open panel closes.
  • Panel buttons: Each button enables only when the matching permission is present (for example Item List needs Add Item, Sandbox Options needs Sandbox Options). If none enable, the panel closes itself.
  • Roles are not only five fixed names: Defaults still include Admin, Moderator, Overseer, GM, Observer (plus User / New User / Priority User / Banned), but each Role is a set of permissions. Custom Roles can grant or remove individual tools.
  • Chat promote is gated: /setaccesslevel requires Change Access Level. Without that permission, the chat command fails — it is not a universal Host unlock.
Common misconceptions to ignore Host is not always Admin every session; Host chat cannot always self-promote; becoming Admin does not always force God Mode and Invisible on; and old “the panel was removed” rumors do not match current Build 42.19 multiplayer staff tools.

Three recovery paths (use the right one)

1. Dedicated server console / RCON

  • Best path when no in-game staff account works.
  • Run promotion from the server process console or RCON, not from a powerless player chat session.
  • Then log in with that username and open the HUD icon.
/setaccesslevel "YourUsername" "admin"

2. Existing staff already online

  • Only accounts with Change Access Level may promote others in chat.
  • They can also use Users / player stats Role UI when those permissions are present.
  • Position rules apply: you generally cannot assign a Role higher than your own position.
/setaccesslevel "PlayerName" "moderator"

3. Host / listen co-op

  • Host flow is not “type setaccesslevel as any Steam name.”
  • Co-op Host UI defaults the server username field to admin — that built-in account is the intended staff login for many Host setups.
  • If your character is a normal User Role, promote it from console/RCON or from an account that already has Change Access Level.
Default level names (help text) Official help lists: Admin, Moderator, Overseer, GM, Observer. Syntax: /setaccesslevel "username" "accesslevel" Example: /setaccesslevel "rj" "moderator". Prefer quoting both username and level.

Find and open the Admin icon

  1. Confirm your Role actually has admin tools (you were promoted correctly, or you logged in as a staff account).
  2. Look at the left-side equipment / HUD button column (same strip as inventory and health controls).
  3. When admin tools are enabled on your Role, the Admin button is visible. Active panel state swaps its on/off icon art.
  4. Click the button to open Admin Panel. If UI scale or mods crowd the strip, lower UI scale or disable UI mods temporarily.
  5. Still missing after a correct Role? Disconnect and rejoin once so the client rebuilds the strip.

What each panel button needs (Build 42.19)

Buttons unlock per Role permission. Empty tools usually mean your Role is partial staff, not that the panel is “broken.”

Edit Admin Powers (self only)

Self toggles in the powers UI include Invisible, God Mode, NoClip, Fast Move, Timed Action Instant, Unlimited Carry / Endurance / Ammo, Know All Recipes, Build / Farming / Fishing / Health / Mechanics / Movables cheats, and Can See All — each tied to its own permission. Turning these off does not remove your Role; it only changes cheat flags for the current character session.

God Mode / Invisible defaults Do not assume every login forces God Mode and Invisible on. Toggle them explicitly in Edit Admin Powers or with the self commands below. Preferences can differ by Role setup and session; check on your own server instead of trusting “always on” folklore.

Safe command examples

Full catalog: Administrator command list. High-value corrections for this topic:

Goal Correct example Permission (chat) Notes
Set Role / access level /setaccesslevel "rj" "admin" Change Access Level Also works from server console/RCON without a powerless client chat
God Mode (self) /godmode -true or /godmode -false Toggle God Mode (self) Aliases include /godmod
God Mode (other player) /godmodeplayer "rj" -false Toggle God Mode (everyone) Do not use /godmode "rj" -false for others
Invisible (self) /invisible -true Toggle Invisible (self) Self only
Invisible (other) /invisibleplayer "rj" -true Toggle Invisible (everyone) Player-targeted form
Teleport to a player /teleport "TargetName" Teleport to Player Prefer official /teleport family over inventing /tp
Give item /additem "rj" Base.Axe 5 Add Item Module.item format; count optional
Wrong pattern that confuses people /godmode "PlayerName" -false mixes a self command with a username argument. For another player use /godmodeplayer "PlayerName" -false. Same pattern for Invisible vs InvisiblePlayer.

Single-player note

There is no multiplayer Admin Panel in pure single-player. For solo creative tools use -debug and the Debug Menu path described in B42 debug vs server commands. Hosting a local multiplayer game is a different path that brings back Roles and the Admin HUD.

Optional admin mods

Third-party admin QoL mods (item spawners, power presets, vehicle GUIs) can help, but treat them as optional extras — not as Build 42.19 built-in staff tools. Before enabling any staff mod on a public server:

  • Confirm Workshop ID, Mod ID, and explicit Build 42 compatibility on the Workshop page.
  • Install on a test copy first; never grant non-staff players item-spawn menus.
  • Keep a full server backup before changing Roles or staff mods.
