Quick-Start: get Long Sticks now
Blocked on shafts? Route the high-weight containers below, then carve Saplings or Ice Hockey Sticks. A soft planning stock of about 6–12 Long Sticks covers a few spears plus one lean-to (5 shafts)—it is not a drop guarantee and scales with Other Loot, map, and luck.
Checklist (stop when stable)
Quick decision
Planning loop (optional timer—not a guaranteed yield)
Timer:
00:00
Use this as a route order only. Yield depends on loot settings, building density, and luck—not wall-clock minutes.
How to get Long Sticks (42.19)
Three pipelines: direct loot, carve shafts from Sapling / Ice Hockey Stick, or strip broom/mop handles. Weights below show how often Long Stick is favored in that container type (higher = better odds)—not a guaranteed count per building.
Container type Relative weight Where it shows up
Long Stick crates 110 Logging factory / logging warehouse crates (best odds), logging truck crates, tool-store crates & metal shelves
Carving / workshop materials 70 Carving / workshop material rolls
Tool-store handles 30 Tool-store handle stock
Garage carpentry / mid–late melee 6–8 Garage carpentry shelves, mid/late melee weapon stock
Barn / carpentry / janitor / garden tools 1–4 Barns, carpentry crates, logging factory tools, janitor tools, gardening crates, Gigamart tools
Pipeline Inputs (42.19) Notes
Direct loot Long Stick in containers above; also world metal shelves / construction bags Best single stop: logging industrial crates stocked for Long Sticks
Carve Long Stick Sapling, Ice Hockey Stick, Ice Hockey Stick with Barbed Wire (+ sharp knife or meat cleaver, not dull) No skill gate; Carving +5 XP; Field Hockey Stick is not a carve input
Get Long Stick Broom, Twig Broom, Barbed Broom, Mop In-hand craft; strips the head for a shaft
Forage Sapling Firewood forage; better odds in deep / organic / birch-type forests Can spear or carve without a town stop; also on log piles as world loot
Priority route (planning order)
  1. Logging factory / warehouse crates
  2. Tool store handle & carpentry shelves
  3. Garage carpentry + barn tools
  4. Sports store / school gym for Ice Hockey Stick
  5. Forest forage for Sapling if industrial is too hot
Leave inventory room: Long Stick and Sapling both weigh 2.0; Ice Hockey Stick weighs 1.5.
Ice Hockey Stick loot (town backup)
  • Sports storage / sports-store ice-hockey stock — relative weight 30
  • School gym sports gear — 8
  • Closet sports equipment / sports crates — 6
Field Hockey Stick can still be a blunt weapon or nail-spiked weapon; it does not feed Carve Long Stick.
Carve Long Stick (42.19 recipe)
Hotfix 42.0.1 renamed “Very Long Stick” → Long Stick. Search crafting for long stick, carve, or spear.
Recipe Tool (kept) Consumes Output / gates
Carve Long Stick Sharp knife or meat cleaver (not dull; may wear lightly) 1× Sapling, Ice Hockey Stick, or Ice Hockey Stick with Barbed Wire 1× Long Stick; no skill required; Carving +5 XP; in-hand
Get Long Stick None Broom / Twig Broom / Barbed Broom / Mop 1× Long Stick; in-hand
Saw Long Stick or Sapling Saw / crude saw (kept) 1× Long Stick or Sapling 2× Wooden Rod (from Long Stick) or 2× Tree Branch (from Sapling)—this spends shafts, not makes them
If the recipe is greyed out
  1. Tools: need a non-dull sharp knife or meat cleaver in inventory.
  2. Materials: Tree Branch / Field Hockey Stick / plain Plank are not Carve Long Stick inputs.
  3. Skill: Carve Long Stick has no skill requirement; Fire Harden Spear is the gated spear upgrade (see Spear Workflow).
Spear workflow (42.19)
You do not always need a pre-carved Long Stick. Carve Spear accepts several long handles directly.
Recipe Shaft / other inputs Unlock / requirements Result
Carve Spear Long Stick, Sapling, Rake, Gaffhook, Ice Hockey Stick, Mop, Broom, or Twig Broom + sharp knife / meat cleaver Always known; in-hand; Carving +5 XP Wooden Spear (max condition 5)
Fire Harden Spear 1× Wooden Spear + sharp knife / meat cleaver Must learn the recipe (or auto-unlock at Spear 6); craft next to an open fire (campfire / similar) Wooden Spear (Fire Hardened, max condition 7)
Bind / Duct Tape / Wire / Assemble Spear Long Stick or Sapling + blade/head parts + bindings Bind/Wire need learning + Maintenance gates; Duct Tape known; Assemble needs Maintenance 1 + hammer Headed spears (knife, stone, glass, forged heads, etc.)
BREAK CHAIN (Wooden Spear / Long Stick):
Wooden Spear breaks → Broken Long Stick + Splinters
Broken Long Stick breaks → Broken Stick + Splinters
Practical strategy
  1. Carry one spear, stash two shafts (base or car trunk)—a soft habit, not a game rule.
  2. Prefer headed spears when you have blades; keep plain wooden spears as disposable reach tools.
  3. Fire-harden only after you have Spear 6 (or the magazine/recipe learned) and a safe open fire—don’t burn a run standing over a campfire in town.
When to hoard Long Sticks instead of burning them on spears
In B42, Long Sticks are infrastructure material as much as weapon material.
If you’re building… Why it matters Long-stick stance
Drying/tanning racks and similar stations Unlock food/leather workflows that stabilize mid-game Hoard first, spear later
Lean-to shelter / early outdoor setups 42.19 lean-to needs 5× Long Stick or Sapling, plus 20 branches/rods, 4 stones, 4 logs, and 2 cloth/twine/rope Bank at least 5 shafts before crafting disposable spears
Pure weapon progression Spears are best treated as disposable weapons Craft only from surplus
Troubleshooting: why Long Sticks feel “bugged”
Four common mistakes:
Mistake 1: Treating branches like sticks
Tree Branch is not a Carve Long Stick input. Use Sapling, Ice Hockey Stick, loot Long Stick crates, or strip a broom/mop with Get Long Stick.
Mistake 2: Searching houses like it’s B41
Do one intentional builder-loot pass through industrial and garage spaces.
Mistake 3: Expecting spear recipes/attachments to behave the old way
  1. Search crafting for “spear” and “attach”.
  2. If you’re running mods, reproduce in vanilla.
  3. On unstable multiplayer, verify the route in vanilla first, then add mods back one at a time.
Mistake 4: Thinking you’re unlucky when you’re unrouted
Use a repeatable route order (yield is not timer-based):
LONG STICK ROUTE (PLANNING ORDER):
1) Logging factory/warehouse crates
2) Tool store handles + garage carpentry
3) Log piles / construction metal shelves
4) Forest forage for Sapling OR sports store for Ice Hockey Stick
5) Carve or Get Long Stick at a safe spot
Minimalist early-game plan (so Long Sticks don’t derail you)
Day 1 (setup)
Day 2 (stabilize)
FAQ
I can’t find Long Sticks anywhere. Are they removed?
No. Prioritize logging crates, tool-store handles, garage carpentry, then carve Sapling / Ice Hockey Stick or strip brooms and mops.
Why do my spears keep turning into broken long sticks?
A Wooden Spear breaks into a Broken Long Stick (plus splinters). Treat plain spears as consumables and keep spare shafts.
Can I craft Long Sticks from tree branches?
No. Carve Long Stick only accepts Sapling and Ice Hockey Stick (plus barbed ice-hockey variant). Branches go to other carving recipes.
Why is Fire Harden Spear missing?
You must learn the recipe (or auto-unlock at Spear 6), and it only crafts next to an open fire. You also need an existing Wooden Spear plus a sharp knife or meat cleaver.
Are spear attachment crafts removed in B42?
Vanilla still has Bind, Duct Tape, Wire, and Assemble spear recipes using Long Stick or Sapling shafts. If they vanish, test without mods first.
Patch history
Key Long Stick changes that affect crafting searches and early-game planning.
Date Change Note Impact on early-game priorities
December 20, 2024 Hotfix 42.0.1 renamed “Very Long Stick” to “Long Stick” (plus other rename cleanups). Old search terms can mislead; search for “long stick” in crafting.
January 21, 2025 42.1 UNSTABLE increased long sticks/saplings required for lean-to shelter. Outdoor survival setups cost more; bank sticks earlier if you live rough.
January 21, 2025 Build 42.1.0 notes “Carve Long Stick” and ice-hockey carving into long sticks. Town backup is Ice Hockey Stick—not Field Hockey Stick.
Build 42.19 Carve Spear accepts multiple shafts; Fire Harden Spear needs learning (auto at Spear 6) and open fire; logging-crate Long Stick loot still strong. Use the recipe tables above rather than old “Very Long Stick” or generic hockey wording.
June 30, 2025 42.10 UNSTABLE includes map usability improvements (e.g., street-name support). Easier routing to industrial/log areas makes targeted stick runs less painful.
December 11, 2025 Unstable 42 multiplayer released (mods discouraged during early testing). If spear recipes look wrong with mods, test the same craft in vanilla first.
