Project Zomboid B42 Tailoring: Real 0→1 XP Path (Build 42.19)
Vanilla Build 42.19 · Shorten recipes give no Tailoring XP · unlock level 1 with Sew Rag Bandana, then Pick Thread and patch gear
0→1 walkthrough (closed material loop)
- Loot starter consumables. Get at least one Needle or Awl, plus Thread and/or Twine. Sewing Kits, sewing shops, and bedding aisles are the reliable sources. See How to Get Thread for container tables.
- Make rags. Rip cotton clothes into Ripped Sheets (not Thread). Scissors that are not dull also run Shorten recipes if you want extra strips while reshaping clothes—but those Shorten actions award no Tailoring XP.
- Craft Sew Rag Bandana on any surface craft station: 1× Needle or Awl (keep) + 2× Ripped Sheets + 1× Thread or Twine use → 1× Rag Bandana + 8 base Tailoring XP. Short craft time.
- Repeat until Tailoring 1. Level 1 needs 75 XP. How many crafts depends on your XP boost and skill book (calculator below).
- At Tailoring 1, open Pick Thread. Destroy 1× Ripped Sheets or Denim Strips with Needle, Tweezers, or Awl (kept) → Thread with one use. That is the sustainable thread loop.
- Reinforce gear you actually wear. Patch holes / add padding consumes fabric + one Thread use + Needle and awards a flat +2 Tailoring XP per complete action.
0→1 craft counter
Uses the 42.19 level-1 total (75 XP) and recipe base awards. Multipliers follow the shared XP boost rules (unboosted ×0.25; boost 1 ×1; boost 2 ×1.33; boost 3+ ×1.66) and optional skill-book multipliers for Tailoring volumes (×3 / ×5 / ×8 / ×12 / ×16). Traits such as Fast Learner and sandbox skill multipliers are not included—treat this as a planning floor.
Level-0 recipes that actually award Tailoring XP
These recipes have no Tailoring skill requirement. Prefer the low-material bandana loop unless you already have garbage bags or tarp pieces.
| Recipe | Base XP | Time | Inputs (kept tools noted) | Output |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sew Rag Bandana | 8 | 100 | Needle or Awl (keep) · 2× Ripped Sheets · Thread or Twine | Rag Bandana |
| Sew Footwraps | 8 | 200 | Needle or Awl (keep) · 6 fabric strips · Thread or Twine | Fabric-mapped wraps |
| Sew Handwraps | 8 | 200 | Needle or Awl (keep) · 6 fabric strips · 2× Thread or Twine | Fabric-mapped wraps |
| Sew Headwrap | 8 | 200 | Needle or Awl (keep) · 5× Ripped Sheets (or burlap) · 2× Thread or Twine | Fabric-mapped headwrap |
| Sew Improvised Bandeau | 8 | 200 | Needle or Awl (keep) · 4 fabric strips · 2× Thread or Twine | Fabric-mapped bandeau |
| Sew Sack | 8 | 200 | 1× Burlap Piece · Needle (keep) · Thread or Twine | Empty Sandbag |
| Garbage-bag clothing set | 6 each | 100–200 | Empty garbage bag(s) · Duct Tape · some need non-dull scissors/knife | Improvised clothing |
| Tarp clothing set | 6 each | 200–300 | Tarp pieces · Duct Tape · often non-dull scissors/knife | Improvised clothing |
Two garbage-bag pieces (tank top, dress) may need a sewing magazine; the simple bag pieces and the rag bandana path do not.
Shorten recipes: useful materials, zero Tailoring XP
These still appear in the Tailoring category and need scissors that are not dull, but they award no Tailoring XP in 42.19. Use them to stock strips, not to level.
| Recipe | XP | Tool | Typical output bonus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shorten Skirt | None | Scissors (not dull, keep) | Shorter skirt + Ripped Sheets |
| Shorten Sleeves | None | Scissors (not dull, keep) | Sleeveless/shorter shirt + Ripped Sheets |
| Shorten Socks | None | Scissors (not dull, keep) | Shorter socks (no fabric strip) |
| Shorten Trousers | None | Scissors (not dull, keep) | Shorter denim + Denim Strips |
Tailoring 1+: thread income and reinforcement
Pick Thread
- Requires Tailoring 1
- Inputs: 1× Ripped Sheets or Denim Strips (destroyed) + Needle, Tweezers, or Awl (kept)
- Output: Thread with only one use
- No XP on Pick Thread itself—use it for materials, then sew/patch for XP
Full spools from loot still win early: a full Thread spool holds about 20 uses (partials consolidate). Twine is accepted by many sew recipes as a thread substitute and is a solid bridge item.
Patch holes / add padding
- Needs clothing + fabric strip + Thread use + Needle
- Duration scales with skill: base 150, minus 6 per Tailoring level
- Awards a flat +2 Tailoring XP per completed patch (not random)
- Removing a patch also awards +2 XP and may return fabric based on chance
Patch only the layers you will still wear after the next panic sprint—bandanas farm skill; pads protect the outfit you keep.
Minimal sewing bag (skill 0)
Quick-start checklist
Build 42.19 facts worth locking in
- Shorten clothing does not level Tailoring in the current recipe set—use it for strips, not XP.
- Pick Thread requires Tailoring 1, so skill 0 needs looted Thread or Twine before the bandana loop.
- Ripping clothes does not drop Thread; it drops fabric strips. Convert strips after level 1.
- Sinew Thread counts as Thread (from animal sinew + hammer-class tool)—useful later, not required for 0→1.
- Sewing / Tailoring magazines mostly unlock clothing recipes; skill books (Tailoring I–V) multiply XP while their multiplier is active.
Vanilla Build 42.19. Level 1 needs 75 Tailoring XP; Sew Rag Bandana awards 8 base XP; Shorten recipes award none; Pick Thread unlocks at skill 1; each completed patch awards +2 Tailoring XP.
