This snapshot has two “latest” answers, depending on which Steam branch you’re using:
Stable (default) and Unstable (Build 42 beta).
If you’re joining friends or a server, align branch + build number first; then deal with mods.

Which Branch Should You Use?

- Main menu build string: launch the game and read the build number shown on the main menu.
- Steam betas setting: Steam → Project Zomboid → Properties → Betas decides whether you’re on stable or unstable.
- Patchnotes receipts: for a “latest as of today” answer, check the newest Steam announcement and/or SteamDB patchnotes for AppID 108600.
Switching Branches Safely (Don’t Cross-Contaminate Saves)
Stable-to-unstable swaps are where people lose weekends. Back up saves, expect mod churn, and do a modless test launch after updating.
Before you swap branches:
- Back up your saves.
- Assume old mods may break (or silently change behavior) on B42.
- Keep separate mod presets for stable vs unstable.
- Do a modless test run first, then add mods in small batches.
