Project Zomboid B42 Desensitized: Veteran Still Panics? Fix It

# Quick-Start (clean B42.19 test)

Answer one question: **is Desensitized failing, or is a different panic path firing?**

**Expected on a clean B42.19 Veteran test:** normal “I see zombies” panic should not stick. You can still get **night terror** spikes after sleep, and you can still show **Stress** that looks “panicky” if you never hover the icon.

Applies to **Build 42.19** (trait text: *“Far less prone to panic. Ignore discomfort.”*).

## What Desensitized does (and doesn’t) in B42.19

Desensitized is a **profession trait** (Veteran, cost 0, mutually exclusive with Brave / Cowardly / Agoraphobic / Claustrophobic / Hemophobic / Adrenaline Junkie). It is **not** “never feels fear.”

Current trait text is **“Far less prone to panic”** — not “immune to every panic source.” Older patch notes that said “completely immune” are outdated; use the path table below.

**Practical takeaway:** “Veteran still freaks out” after a clean daylight zombie test is usually **Stress misread as Panic**, a **sleep nightmare**, or a **mod/save** issue — not proof that sight-panic immunity is broken.

## Night terrors: the sleep tax

Desensitized **does not** turn off sleeping-event nightmares.

- Nightmares can still fire for Desensitized; the trait only **lowers** how often they roll (roughly half the base chance before Stress adds more).
- On a nightmare wake, you still get about **+70 Panic** and **+0.5 Stress**, plus the nightmare wake sound.
- Sandbox **Sleeping Event** (Never / Sometimes / Often) controls how aggressive sleep interruptions are overall — check server/sandbox if nightmares feel constant.

Bedtime toolbox:
- Sleep behind **two layers** (barricade + furniture + a door you can hear).
- Keep a weapon **within reach** (not buried in a bag).
- If your sandbox/server has Sleeping Event at **Often**, expect more wake spikes even on Veteran.

## Survival months: panic decays faster (you do not earn the trait)

Vanilla **does not** unlock Desensitized over time. What improves is **how fast leftover Panic drains**:

- Panic recovery scales with in-game survival months, **capped at five months**.
- While **asleep**, recovery is **twice as fast**.
- Net effect: after more months survived (up to five), leftover Panic drains faster. That is **not** the same as gaining the Desensitized trait, and it does not block nightmare +70 spikes.

- Confirm **server build matches client build**.

- Reproduce on a **vanilla local** save before calling it a trait bug.
