Some users are finding that the font size in Project Zomboid is too small, especially when played at high resolutions. The game is built on older OpenGL standards, which are not compatible with 4K resolution. As a result, gamers who use 4K monitors will have to deal with a smaller UI.
The game’s rendering code was optimized in 2018 to make it playable at 1920×1080, but this is still not ideal for 4k monitors, it is still recommended that players lower their resolution for better performance. There is also the possibility in the future of replacing the current font renderer with a TrueType-style one that would look good at all resolutions.
The developers are aware of the issue and are working on a way to improve the game’s UI so that it is more visible on all resolutions. In the meantime, players who want to play on a 4k resolution will just have to wait patiently for a fix.

How to properly scale UI in-game
4k and Readability can still be an issue, so if you’re not happy with the default settings, you can enable larger fonts in the Options screen. This will increase the size of some UI elements, though not all of them.
There are two different options – one for inventory font size and one for global font size. Be sure to change Font size, not just inventory font size.
If you’re playing on a high resolution, it’s important to not enable Zoom levels over 200%, as this will significantly impact your frame rate. You can check this in the Options screen – 225% and 250% should be disabled by default.
What to do if UI scaling is not working properly
If you’re having trouble getting UI scaling to work properly, there are a few things you can try:
- Set the system(windows) scaling to 100%. This may fix the problem for some applications.
- If you’re still having issues, you can enable larger fonts in the Options screen. This will increase the size of some UI elements, although not all of them. There are two options – one for inventory font size and one for global font size. Be sure to change the Font size option, not just the inventory font size.
- Finally, if you’re playing on a high resolution, it’s important to not enable Zoom levels over 200%. Otherwise, you’ll see a significant drop in the frame rate.
- If you are having trouble with UI scaling, it may be necessary to go into your graphics cards’ settings and enable GPU scaling. This will allow you to downsize from your native desktop resolution
