Maximize Reading Speed in Project Zomboid (Build 42.19)
Build 42.19 · Reading speed depends on book pages, MinutesPerPage, Day Length, traits, glasses, and posture
<ServerName>_SandboxVars.lua file (sandbox Character page), not servertest.ini. Fixed “15 / 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 minute” skill-book tables do not match Build 42.19 page counts.
Vanilla ways to read faster
- Fast Reader trait (cost 2) — multiplies remaining read time by 0.7 (~30% faster). Mutually exclusive with Slow Reader and Illiterate.
- Wear Reading Glasses on the eyes slot — another ×0.9 while equipped.
- Sit while reading — sit on the ground or furniture for ×0.9. Standing does not get this bonus.
- Single-player time speed — once the read action is running, use the top-bar fast-forward controls so real-world waiting shrinks without changing the in-game page rate.
- Lower MinutesPerPage — sandbox Character option that sets base in-game minutes per page (default 2.0). Critical in multiplayer, where you cannot freely skip time alone.
Stacking example: Fast Reader + glasses + sitting ≈ ×0.7 × 0.9 × 0.9 = ×0.567 of the base real-time duration (about 43% faster than an unmodified read, not 70%+).

In-game trait tooltips only say books take less or more time; the exact ×0.7 / ×1.3 values are the current game multipliers. For trait planning more broadly, see the occupations and traits guide and the traits index.
Reading Glasses and sitting (vanilla 10% each)
- Reading Glasses must be worn in the eyes slot. Other eyewear does not apply this ×0.9 factor.
- Sitting counts when you are on the ground or on furniture. Start the read action while seated; standing mid-read loses the bonus for the remaining duration.
- Both stack with traits and with each other. Neither replaces Fast Reader if you want the full vanilla boost.
On Build 42.19 the seat bonus is built in. Older “read faster while sitting” Workshop mods targeted Build 41; prefer vanilla ×0.9 first, and only add a sitting mod if you want a larger boost and accept possible conflicts with other reading mods.
How reading time is calculated
Base duration uses page count and sandbox MinutesPerPage, then Day Length converts that into real time:
real minutes ≈ pages × MinutesPerPage × day_length_hours ÷ 24
Then multiply by trait / glasses / sitting factors. Default MinutesPerPage = 2.0 means two in-game minutes per page (0.5 pages per in-game minute). Literature with no page count is treated as 5 pages for duration.
Apocalypse (and several other 42.19 presets) use Day Length option 4 = 1 hour 30 minutes real time per game day. Clean “1 hour day” examples are still useful for mental math, but your world may not match them.

Change MinutesPerPage (Host / dedicated)
- Open Host setup or Edit Selected Settings for the dedicated preset.
- Open sandbox settings → Character page.
- Set MinutesPerPage (default 2.0). Lower values finish books sooner.
- Save, then fully restart Host/server so the world reloads sandbox values.

Stop the server, back up the file, set for example MinutesPerPage = 1.0, inside the SandboxVars table, save, and restart.

Workshop mods (Build 41 listings)
Vanilla already covers traits, glasses, sitting, and MinutesPerPage on 42.19. The three mods below are often linked for “instant books,” but Steam Workshop still lists them for Build 41. Treat them as Build 41 options unless you test them on a copy of your 42 world first.

Prefer sandbox MinutesPerPage for multiplayer QoL when you control the server. Only add reading mods if every client and the server share the same package and you accept possible conflicts with other reading-related mods.
FAQ
Does Fast Reader cut reading time by 70%?
No. On Build 42.19 it multiplies duration by 0.7, so you spend about 70% of the base time—a ~30% reduction, not a 70% cut.
Is the default speed 2 pages per minute?
No. Default MinutesPerPage = 2.0 means two in-game minutes per page (0.5 pages per in-game minute). Real pages per real minute also depend on Day Length.
Where is MinutesPerPage stored for multiplayer?
In Zomboid/Server/<ServerName>_SandboxVars.lua, editable from the sandbox Character page. It is not a servertest.ini key.
Why does my book finish at a different real time than a friend’s?
Compare Day Length, MinutesPerPage, Fast/Slow Reader, Reading Glasses, sitting, time-speed usage (solo), interruptions, and remaining unread pages. Tables assume a full unread book with no pauses.
Do I need a mod to sit-read faster on Build 42?
Not for the standard 10% seat bonus—vanilla already multiplies by 0.9 when sitting on the ground or furniture. Mods only help if you want larger speedups than vanilla offers.
