Project Zomboid’s Infection Mode? Here’s How to Survive Bite-Free
🎯 One-Sentence Snapshot
You can turn off infection in Project Zomboid B41/B42 by tweaking sandbox Zombie Lore settings (set Transmission to None and Infection Mortality to Never), or by using mods/cheats to cure or disable both the lethal Knox virus and regular wound/food infections.

Understanding Infections in Project Zomboid
In Project Zomboid, "infection" can mean two very different things:
🧟 The Knox Event virus
The zombie plague that turns you undead after a bite/scratch. By default, bites are 100% fatal, scratches have a 7% infection chance, and lacerations 25%.
Once infected, you'll see Queasy/Agitated moodles, fever, and declining health over 2-3 days until death.
🦠 Regular infections & illnesses
Normal health threats like infected wounds, food poisoning, and diseases from corpses. These can sicken or kill your character but are not the zombie virus.
These are generally treatable with proper medical supplies, rest, and in Build 42, antibiotics.
Understanding this difference is key because turning off "infection" in sandbox only refers to the zombie infection by default. The game doesn't have a single master switch to turn off all illnesses.
Permanent Solutions: Disabling Zombie Virus Infection
The simplest way to turn off the zombie infection is using the Custom Sandbox settings when you start a new game (or in server settings for multiplayer).
Sandbox Settings Method (No Mods Required)
Under the Zombie Lore section of sandbox tuning, there are two critical parameters:
-
Transmission – controls how the virus spreads (bite, blood, etc.)
Set to "None" to completely disable zombie virus transmission
-
Infection Mortality – controls how deadly the virus is and how quickly it kills
Set to "Never" to ensure that even if infected, your character never dies from the virus
Sandbox "Zombie Lore" options example:
Transmission = None
Infection Mortality = Never
Editing Config Files (Server & Advanced Users)
If you're running a dedicated server or want to change an existing save's settings, you can edit the sandbox config file directly:
- Locate the
Servertest_SandboxVars.lua
file for your server (or theSandboxVars.lua
in a save folder). - Open it in a text editor and find the lines for Transmission and InfectionMortality.
- Set their values to the numbers corresponding to None and Never respectively.
Transmission = 4, -- 4 means None
InfectionMortality = 7, -- 7 means Never
Save the file and restart the game/server to apply changes.
💡 Alternative Setting: "Everyone's Infected"
Another preset option is "Everyone's Infected" mode (Transmission = Everyone's Infected), which mirrors The Walking Dead style lore. In that mode, everyone already has the virus, so bites don't cause zombification (no additional infection to catch). You only turn if you die from any cause.
Trade-offs & Gameplay Impact
Be aware that removing zombification does change the game's balance:
- Benefits: No more fear of a single bite ending your run. Better for co-op play and long-term building projects.
- Drawbacks: The game loses some tension. Without the zombie virus threat, survival becomes less challenging.
If you want to keep some danger, consider alternatives like "Bite only infection" (Transmission: Saliva Only) or using mods that add cure mechanics.
Mod-Based Solutions and Cheats
If you're already mid-game or want more nuanced options, mods offer flexibility and additional features.
Top Mods to Disable or Cure Zombie Infection
"Immune to Zombie Infection"
This mod simply makes your character immune to the Knox virus. You can still be bitten and injured (and even get regular wound infections), but you will not zombify from zombie attacks.
"Antibodies" Mod
Adds a chance to fight off the infection instead of a guaranteed death. It simulates your immune system producing antibodies over time. If you take care of yourself, your body might overcome the Knox infection.
"Dark's Zombie Infection Cure"
A mod for those who want a literal cure in the game world. Adds a rare findable item (a cure) that can completely cure the zombie virus, as well as a craftable antidote syringe that temporarily halts infection progression.
Amputation Mods
Mods like "The Only Cure" let you perform amputation on bitten limbs. If you act quickly after a bite to, say, your hand, you can amputate it and if successful, the virus is stopped (along with a whole host of other pain problems).
Disabling Regular Infections & Diseases
What about the other infections (wound infections, food poisoning, etc.)? The base game doesn't have explicit on/off toggles for these, but here are ways to effectively remove or mitigate them:
Infection Type | How to Disable/Mitigate | Build 42 Changes |
---|---|---|
Wound Infections |
• Set Basic Injury Severity lower in sandbox • Always use sterilized bandages and disinfectant • Use First Aid mods that configure infection chances |
Build 42 added antibiotics as a required treatment for serious infected wounds |
Food Poisoning |
• Set Food Spoilage to "very slow" • Turn Rotten Food Removal on • Stock up on Lemongrass (reduces food poisoning) |
B42 made food poisoning less lethal (illness intensity halved) |
Tainted Water |
• No direct toggle • Always boil or purify water • Consider water filter mods |
No major changes in B42 |
Mod-Added Diseases |
• Check mod config for toggles • Disable the specific mod if necessary |
Depends on the specific mod |
In summary, regular infections can usually be managed with good gameplay practices or a little creative modding. Unlike the zombie virus, they are not one-hit kills except in extreme neglect cases.
Debug Mode & Cheat Menu
If you didn't turn infection off initially, and now your character has been bitten and is fading fast, you can rescue them via debug/cheats.
Using Debug Mode
-
On Steam, right-click Project Zomboid > Properties > in Launch Options type
-debug
and start the game. - Once in-game, you'll see a new icon (a little bug or mosquito icon) at the bottom-right. Click it to open the debug menu.
- Go to General Debuggers > Player or Health and look for the option to "Heal" or toggle God Mode.
- If you toggle God Mode on your character briefly, it will instantly cure all injuries and illnesses, including the Knox infection.
Note: Using debug does mark your save as "cheated" (you won't get achievements after turning it on).
Using Cheat Menu Mod
If the built-in debug is not user-friendly enough, there's a mod called "Cheat Menu" (and its updated fork "Cheat Menu Rebirth").
- Install the mod via Steam Workshop.
- In-game, right-click to access the "Cheat Menu".
- Look for options like "Heal Whole Body" or "Toggle God Mode".
This mod works in B41 and B42 (and even in multiplayer if you're admin).
Admin Powers on Servers
If you're on a multiplayer server and you're the admin, you can type /god <username>
in chat to toggle god mode on a player (if the server allows it).
Some admin panels also have a "heal player" function. Make sure to turn god mode off after (the player might have their weight reset or stop losing/gaining weight while it's on).
Build 41 vs Build 42 – Infection Changes
Build 42 introduced some tweaks to infection mechanics. Here are the notable differences:
Build 41 (Dec 2019 Stable)
- Major combat overhaul with new animations
- Infection chances: 7% for scratches, 25% for lacerations, 100% for bites
- Added detailed Sandbox options for Transmission and Mortality
- Regular wound infections generally recoverable with time
- Food poisoning could be lethal if untreated
- No antibiotics item in the game
Build 42 (2024-2025 Unstable)
- Focus on expanded crafting and balance
- Added Antibiotics item to cure normal infections
- Some regular infections now require medicine to treat
- Food poisoning effect adjusted (less lethal - illness intensity halved)
- Community suspects higher zombie infection probability from scratches (unconfirmed)
- No official cure for Knox virus (still incurable without mods)
The bottom line: Build 42 is a bit tougher on illness but a bit gentler on food poisoning. The zombie virus remains as deadly as ever by default. All the methods we discussed (sandbox settings, mods, debug) apply to both B41 and B42.
Enjoy Project Zomboid Your Way!
